Psalm 51: Create in Me a Clean Heart

I woke up this morning reflecting on the nature of the soul, and the many wrestlings I find taking place in my own heart. It’s not difficult to see how there are many workings in that space needing to be addressed and taken to God in a manner whereby he can continue his work of sanctification. In the midst of this reflection, Psalm 51:10 came to mind:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

King David wrote this psalm after his willful affair with Bathsheba and facilitating the murder of her husband, Uriah. The tragedies these actions unleashed in his life thereafter were horrific, nevertheless he understood the depth of his sin, the great evil which he had done, and his acute need of the grace of God.

“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified when you speak and blameless when You judge.”

The more I consider this psalm, the more I sense how essential it is to maintain an awareness of the sinful tendencies of our heart, and our immense need of the love and grace of God. For it is when we clearly recognize the nature of sin, we find the only sufficient and appropriate recourse is desperately running toward God and humbling ourselves before Him.
